The target I received when I started my job at Gunvor Petroleum Rotterdam is to refresh the mindset of the IT team and work more closer to the business. The IT department lost the reliance of the business last years, because the team was not well managed. My predecessor killed a lot of IT projects initiated by the business and was also more focused on developing in his own application. Because of this the IT landscape was old, consist of a lot of legacy systems and the trust with the business was lost.
In a short term I succeeded to improve some parts of the IT infrastructure, standardize some processes and motivate the IT team. Because of this the IT team was more motivated and it was easier for the business to contact IT.
Next to this improvement in Rotterdam I also increased the cooperation with the other Gunvor refineries in Antwerp (Belgium) and Ingolstadt (Germany) and the head office in Switzerland to learn from each other and to standardize way of working, standardize the IT landscape and find synergies to strength the IT teams on all 3 refineries.
As the IT coordinator withing Gunvor Petroleum Rotterdam I have the final accountability for the helpdesk, system administrator, network administrator, application managers and business consultants / project managers. All these disciplines are part of my team en with this team we succeed to have the IT up and running for the refinery in Rotterdam.
I am also responsible for the operational and capital investment budget of the IT department. In 2020 I realized the 5 years IT strategy document to show the refinery management the roadmap of IT for replacing the old infrastructure and the legacy systems.
Last but not least, next to the tasks described above I also have the personality to support my team and help my team where needed. Important to be part of this so I know what happens in the organization and in the team. I fully believe that a good leader will also have good followers. And this will also keep me sharp on the IT development.
After my successful role as IT Business Consultant within VARO I was promoted in April 2017 to the role of Service Line Leader Terminals. At that moment I also started my search for a new IT Business Consultant for the Benelux organization, my replacement.
Next to the project management role as described I was in my new role responsible for the IT team members in the different countries working for the terminals. The goal was to create 1 team where team members from different countries can learn from each other and share their experiences. This was also the base of standardization of IT landscape and infrastructure for terminals in the different countries.
One of the biggest projects was the roll out of the Dutch and Belgian Terminal Automation System in all German terminals and renew also the IT infrastructure and hardware.
Local initiated projects were replaced by projects for all terminals in all countries and where also assayed in other countries first. If a solution was already in place in another country, that should be the standard also for the requested country. With this the goal was to standardize IT on all VARO terminals over all countries.
To make this successful and possible also reorganization of the IT teams in the different countries was part of my job. What I really liked in this job was that this function was newly created and gave me all the flexibility to fulfill it in my way.
I was appointed as project manager of 1 of the top 3 strategic projects of VARO Energy to standardize all terminals in all countries; roll out of a new terminal management system for all German terminals to align the terminals with the terminals in The Netherlands and Belgium. The scope of the project was not limited to the roll out of the new TAS system, but also replacement of the existing IT infrastructure and hardware.
As project manager I was responsible for a team of 5 internal colleagues to prepare a roll out at a terminal and also do the roll out at the end. Next to these 5 members I also had a Business Change Manager in my team to take the business part of the project and I had contacts with the suppliers who mainly did the job. The scope of the project was to renew 20 German Terminals. I succeeded 13 German terminals in time and budget and at that moment I decided to leave VARO Energy.
Started with VARO Energy as the IT Business Consultant for the Dutch and Belgian terminals. This was a challenging job since a lot of projects at the terminals were stopped because of the leave of the previous Business Consultant 9 months before. Restarted quickly to get the projects up and running again and on a short term the success was great and I also started to standardize IT applications at German terminals as well.
Within this role I was primary responsible for the Terminal Automation System, TAS, at the Dutch and Belgian terminals and all other applications linked to this primary system like product stock management solution, alarm management system on tanks and loading bays, quality control systems, document management system for sharing documents and all other relevant software.
Next to the applications at terminals I was also involvement in an advisor role for IT infrastructure at terminals.
If a Business Consultancy tasks resulted in changes or projects, I was also often the project manager or coordinator for the realization of it.
As IT Business Consultant I was responsible for the translation of business requests / problems into (IT) solutions. IT is not always necessarily an IT solution, sometimes optimization of existing process was also a solution for the business.
Within Kuwait Petroleum in my role as IT Business Consultant I had the responsibility for the IT systems of the following departments:
At Infravision I was an implementation consultant for an ITSM solution called BMC Service Desk Express. My role as implementation consultant was mainly:
Initially my role was to manage the IT application landscape of Kuwait Petroleum technically. Soon after I also started developing solutions and reports for the business:
My first job in IT I started at Caesar Optimit Zuid as a developer for the Microsoft platform. I developed several solutions for customers where development was based on 2 or 3 layers with Visual Basic, Microsoft SQL and Microsoft Access platforms. One of the biggest challenges at that moment was of course the millennium bug, where I did a lot of development on this subject with Philips, Shell and Vopak in The Netherlands.
I started at this organization with no IT background and on a short term I was a certified Microsoft Developer.
